Overview:

The Apprentice Operator I role requires foundational abilities in the transport, operation, and servicing of specialized heavy machinery utilized in the recovery of railroad incidents, including the lifting and repositioning of derailed trains and engines. This position also involves supporting initial operator responsibilities at chemical remediation sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and operate heavy machinery efficiently.
  • Drive tractor-trailer units or support vehicles as needed.
  • Perform maintenance and servicing on heavy machinery, trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
  • Handle and manage heavy-duty chains, blocks, cables, and other tools.
  • Access and navigate under derailed train cars and various machinery.
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of equipment using both small and large tools.
  • Utilize cutting torches and welding apparatus safely.
  • Employ a variety of hand and power tools effectively.
  • Lift weights up to 150 lbs, with frequent handling of items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Work at heights on train cars, bridges, or in aquatic environments.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Understand and implement hazardous materials protocols.
  • Keep accurate records of equipment servicing.
  • Ensure the security and proper use of company tools.
  • Carry out additional related tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred: High School diploma.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a similar or related role.
  • Possession of a Class A CDL.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Capability to conduct inspections effectively.
  • Recognize the necessity for maintenance checks and know the location of specific equipment components.
  • Exhibit correct procedures during equipment inspections.
  • Apply mechanical knowledge proficiently.
  • Understand the operational limitations of machinery.
  • Demonstrate safe practices in equipment setup and breakdown, including proper lifting and driving techniques.

Work Schedule:

  • Availability required Monday through Sunday, either on-site or at the division.
  • On-call status for 24-hour emergency responses to derailments.
  • Standard 8-hour shifts from Monday to Friday, with on-call duties at other times for urgent derailment responses.
  • The Response Team must maintain availability at all hours.
