Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and physically fit Public Service Worker to join our team in the Water and Sewer Services department. As a Public Service Worker, you will be responsible for performing manual labor tasks, including construction and maintenance work, in a physically demanding environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform manual labor tasks, including construction and maintenance work, in a physically demanding environment.
  • Assist in the maintenance of indoor and outdoor facilities, including buildings, pavilions, structures, offices, bathrooms, hallways, shops, grounds, shoreline, docks, and garbage collection.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up of programs, events, and special events.
  • Perform general horticulture practices, including weeding, weed-eating, mowing grass, pruning, fertilization, trimming, edging, and snow removal.
  • Sweep streets, sidewalks, shops, and alleys, and pick up refuse and brush on streets.
  • Load dirt and construction materials from or onto a truck.
  • Perform various street maintenance duties, including cleaning gutters, spreading rock, sand, and salt, and shoveling snow.
  • Dig and backfill ditches by hand.
  • Assist in the installation of water services, mains, and hydrants, and in the repair of water mains.
  • Paint meters, valves, and pipe fittings.
  • Dig and backfill trenches, and assist in laying pipe.
  • Unstop sewers by using rods, buckets, specialized sewer cleaning and flushing equipment, or by hand.
  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of golf courses, including operating maintenance equipment and power mowers.
  • Perform simple repair work on buildings and facilities.
  • Clean grounds, playing fields, ponds, pools, paths, playground equipment, walks, and park facilities.
  • Maintain play fields and facilities by wetting down, laying out, and lining playing areas.
  • Water, fertilize, cultivate, and trim lawns, shrubs, flowers, and trees.
  • Assist skilled staff in maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Load and unload stone, gravel, asphalt, dirt, timber, leaves, sweepings, salt, sand, and other materials.
  • Load garbage.
  • Replace cans and lids in proper places.
  • Assist with repairing and maintaining garbage and recycling totes.
  • Wash and maintain service trucks and vehicles.
  • Feed brush into chipper machine.
  • Cut brush and hedges in alleys.
  • Rake and collect leaves with leaf machine.
  • Thaw frozen water lines and meters.
  • Mow and trim golf course and change cups.
  • Rake sand traps.
  • Manicure greens.
  • Spray garbage cans, dumpster, and standing water for mosquitoes and flies.
  • Prepare and place bait for rodents.
  • Erect fences.
  • Assist on television unit inspecting and sealing sewer lines.
  • Paint guard rails, street lines, and curbs.
  • Position traffic cones and barricades.
  • Assist in erecting street signs and meter posts.
  • Fill and position traffic safety lanterns.
  • Wash off old paint from sign plates, straighten, and refinish sign plates, paint sign posts.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Assist in servicing emergency calls, including removing snow from streets, repairing broken water mains and sewer lines, and in similar situations.
  • Be proficient in the operation of all golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Be proficient in the adjustment and required daily maintenance of all golf course equipment.
  • Have knowledge of irrigation repairs on turf areas.
  • Be proficient in pesticide and chemical applications to turf (as supervised by a licensed applicator).
  • Perform related tasks as required.
Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with some knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools and standard equipment used in construction and maintenance work. The ideal candidate will have general mechanical ability and the ability to perform unskilled or semiskilled tasks in construction and maintenance activities. The candidate should be able to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual labor for extended periods, under varying weather conditions, are also required.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Completion of high school or GED and some experience in performing general manual work are required. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will also be considered. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Tennessee is also required. A pre-employment physical and background check are required for this position.
