Job Summary

The Pathologist Assistant Lead will contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by performing a variety of tasks related to the gross and frozen section rooms.

Main Responsibilities
  • Operational oversight of the gross room, including staff and trainees.
  • Gross examination and prosection of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Supervision and training of Residents, Pathologist Assistants, and Histotechnologists in gross examination and prosection.
  • Gross photography and archiving.
  • Tissue banking and intraoperative frozen section consultation.
Key Performance Indicators
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the gross and frozen section rooms based on patient care needs, regulatory, and quality standards.
  • Implement new technology in the gross room and ensure the gross room is continually clean, in order, and well-supplied for optimal operation.
  • Exercise independent judgment and responsibility for technical and administrative decisions in collaboration with the laboratory director(s), AP manager, and supervisors of other anatomic pathology laboratories.
Leadership and Management
  • Management responsibility for other Pathologist Assistants.
  • Hiring, orientation, training, and competency assessment of Pathologist Assistants.
  • Day-to-day supervision of Pathologist Assistants' activities.
  • Training, orientation, and competence assessment of Residents and Histotechnologists in gross examination and prosection.
Requirements
  • Assist in all aspects of anatomic pathology under the direction and supervision of a pathologist.
  • Participate in seminars and provide instruction for Residents, medical students, and departmental staff concerning technique and protocol in autopsy and surgical pathology.
  • Perform complex surgical resections and autopsies, including gross, PAD/FAD, and clinical summary.
