POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Clinical Respiratory Specialist at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital is responsible for delivering essential in-patient respiratory care, which includes the administration of BIPAP/CPAP and high-flow oxygen therapy. This role also encompasses emergency interventions involving ventilator management and arterial blood gas (ABG) collection and analysis. Additionally, the specialist will conduct cardiac and pulmonary diagnostic assessments and facilitate rehabilitation programs for patients with respiratory conditions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Set up and operate various therapeutic devices, including oxygen delivery systems and nebulizers, to administer prescribed medicinal gases and aerosolized medications to patients in a hospital setting.
- Interpret physician prescriptions to ascertain treatment requirements, including the type and duration of therapy, as well as medication dosages.
- Assess the most effective method for administering inhalants, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and necessary adjustments to align with physician directives.
- Verify patient identity by examining identification bands and charge information.
- Gather and transport necessary materials and equipment to patient locations, while clearly explaining treatment procedures to alleviate patient anxiety and encourage cooperation.
- Properly fit and position face masks or cannulas, prepare medications as per prescriptions, and adjust equipment settings to regulate the flow of oxygen or other inhalants.
- Monitor patients during therapy sessions, providing guidance on breath control and promptly notifying physicians of any adverse reactions. Ensure that equipment gauges reflect the required pressure levels.
- Operate ventilators or CPAP/BiPAP machines to deliver therapeutic gases and medications in aerosolized form to patients' respiratory systems.
- Maintain comprehensive patient charts that document all relevant information, including patient name, room number, equipment used, and concentrations administered.
- Prepare billing documentation for inhalants, equipment utilized, and specialized services rendered, ensuring accurate submission to financial management for patient account processing.
- Conduct inspections and tests on all inhalation therapy equipment to confirm proper functionality. Clean and sterilize equipment using appropriate methods to ensure readiness for future use.
- Participate in ongoing education through classroom training and on-the-job in-services, focusing on equipment usage and advancements in respiratory therapy.
- Uphold safety protocols, ensuring that hospital staff, patients, and visitors are informed of necessary precautions.
- Execute procedures for holter monitoring, stress testing, bronchodilator response testing, and pulmonary function assessments, including the documentation required for interpretation.
- Demonstrate competency in addressing the specific needs of patients across various age groups.
