Position Overview

As a key leader within our organization, the Charge Nurse will oversee the operational aspects of the hospital during assigned shifts. This role is crucial in ensuring optimal patient care and staff management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assume full accountability for the management of the hospital during the designated shift.
  • Assess staffing requirements and reallocate personnel as necessary, in collaboration with senior nursing leadership.
  • Document and address staff absences, ensuring shifts are filled to maintain safe patient care levels.
  • Conduct rounds across all units, supervising staff activities and providing direct care support when required.
  • Guide unit staff on policies and procedures, facilitating the implementation of new protocols.
  • Provide constructive feedback to Nurse Managers regarding staff performance evaluations.
  • Exemplify trauma-informed care practices, mentoring staff in their application.
  • Encourage the use of de-escalation techniques to minimize the need for restraints.
  • Assist staff in crisis situations, facilitating immediate debriefing sessions post-incident.
  • Coordinate telemedicine services for new admissions and restraint cases as needed.
  • Maintain communication with administration regarding incidents, emergencies, and staffing challenges.
  • Report critical medical issues and significant incidents to the appropriate leadership personnel.
  • Implement and oversee disaster response plans.
  • Ensure all incidents during the shift are accurately documented and reported.
  • Support the Intake Coordinator in evaluating the clinical suitability of potential admissions.
  • Collaborate with admissions teams to ensure appropriate patient placements.
  • Maintain an updated supervisor log detailing patient and staff information for continuity of care.
  • Uphold professionalism in all interactions with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Demonstrate reliability through consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse licensure in Massachusetts is mandatory.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in psychiatric and mental health nursing is essential, along with CPR certification.
  • Proven leadership capabilities in previous roles.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and best practices in behavioral health.
  • Ability to guide staff in meeting regulatory standards and delivering high-quality care.
  • Capacity to manage staffing levels in accordance with budgetary constraints.
  • Responsibility for ensuring comprehensive care delivery throughout the 24-hour period.
Reports to: Chief Nursing Officer
Supervises: All hospital personnel during the assigned shift.
