Surgical Services Nurse Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Surgical Services Nurse to join our team at Bryan Health. As a key member of our surgical team, you will provide direct patient care to patients in the surgical environment, addressing their physical, psychosocial, and general needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct patient care, including monitoring, positioning, and assisting patients during procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Assist with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory, ensuring a safe and efficient operating environment.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes to enhance patient care.
  • Assess the operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtaining supplies as needed and ensuring the surgical team's needs are met.
  • Monitor and respond to patient anxiety or distress, taking appropriate actions and documenting responses.
  • Adapt nursing procedures to meet the needs of individual patients, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
  • Identify and respond to physical symptoms and changes, taking timely and appropriate actions.
  • Assess and reassess patient pain, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques and educating patients and families on pain management.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles over the lifespan, providing age-appropriate care to patients.
  • Direct and assist in the maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments.
  • Observe and respond to behavioral and physiologic changes due to medications, taking appropriate actions and documenting responses.
  • Position patients safely, padding and protecting bony prominences.
  • Prep and drape patients correctly for procedures.
  • Carry out medical and surgical asepsis during all procedures.
  • Treat patients and families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs.
  • Participate in instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring, actively contributing to maintaining a safe and efficient operating environment.
  • Make decisions reflecting knowledge of dysrhythmias, followed by appropriate treatment.
  • Perform all duties of circulating and scrub nurses, utilizing initiative and striving for a steady level of productivity.

Education/Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with a BSN program preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Nebraska.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Must obtain PALS and ACLS within 6 months of hire.
