Position Overview
The Senior Underwriting Officer, specializing in Construction, will report directly to the Executive Underwriting Officer of Major Accounts Casualty. This division engages with large and intricate commercial risks to provide Primary and Excess Casualty programs to our esteemed clientele. Your primary focus will be on our Major Construction portfolio, which caters to some of the largest contractors across the nation. The Senior Underwriting Officer will collaborate with the leadership team, deliver expert technical guidance, and act as the primary contact for frontline underwriting teams regarding inquiries, critical decisions, or referrals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Offer expert technical underwriting support and formal referral approvals across multiple lines of business (including auto, general liability, workers' compensation, and lead/excess) within the Major Construction sector. Engage independently with field underwriters and directly with underwriting managers on all mandatory referral cases and voluntary consultation matters.
  • Ensure seamless continuity and alignment between Primary and Excess Casualty placements.
  • Assist the Executive Underwriting Officer on transactions and serve as a trusted advisor in areas of exposure, coverage analysis, and key pricing/financial elements within their authority.
  • Oversee frameworks for underwriting decisions (e.g., referrals, technical reviews) and recommend enhancements as necessary.
  • Regularly assess portfolio performance in Major Construction, collaborating with Underwriting Leaders to identify performance drivers, risks, and opportunities.
  • Promote underwriting technical excellence across Major Construction, working with Underwriting Leaders to identify and resolve challenges.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting Leaders to pinpoint product and service enhancements, underwriter capability development opportunities (e.g., skills, tools), and elevate these to the Executive Underwriting Officer and Chief Underwriting Officer of Major Accounts.
  • Foster effective collaboration within and across teams, stakeholders, and partners (e.g., UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, NA Product Teams).
Qualifications
  • Expert-level understanding of all aspects of coverage forms, exclusions, and exposures. Knowledge of pricing, structure, rating, rating plans, loss forecasting, and credit risk is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in various industry segments, particularly with Construction programs; familiarity with insurance operations, claims, finance and actuarial concepts, regulatory environments, loss control/risk engineering, reinsurance, account management, product development, and industry trends.
  • Adept collaborator who can evaluate all perspectives of an issue, engage others with expertise, and independently execute and advance collaborative efforts.
  • Essential professional skills include superior communication abilities (written, verbal, presentation, listening); approachability; tact; coaching and development; analytical and problem-solving skills; relationship and service orientation; clear solutions focus; and a commitment to achieving operational and financial objectives; negotiation skills; and a proven ability to positively influence others both internally and externally as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree with 10 or more years of relevant experience encompassing underwriting, claims, reinsurance, coaching/developing others, and engagement with brokers/agents, along with a current understanding of market trends and developments.
