Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality patient care to patients with general psychiatric conditions, including thought disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and other psychotic disorders.
  • Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary treatment team to support patients with intellectual disability and co-occurring mental illness (IDMI) who display challenging behaviors.
  • Perform technical assessments, administer immunizations, assist with minor surgeries, administer medications and treatments, fit orthopedic devices, and manage clinic programs.
  • Provide patient education regarding diagnosis, medication, and treatment under direct or indirect supervision of the physician or as directed by clinic protocols.
  • Apply dressings, assess and document wound condition, remove sutures, assure proper fit of orthopedic equipment, and provide treatments according to standardized protocols.
  • Initiate basic cardiac life support and assist in emergency situations as needed.
  • Assure timely reporting of lab work to physician staff and appropriate transfer of medical records as directed by physician or as requested by patients.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of medical equipment and patient education materials in patient examination areas.
  • Perform physical assessment, which may include vital signs, weight, height, and current history, and make observations relevant to patient conditions.
Requirements
  • Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the Iowa Board of Nursing, or eligible for temporary work permit.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Medical Terminology.
  • Public Contact/Customer Service.
