Critical Care Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner

The Critical Care Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner at Hackensack Meridian Health assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients under the supervision of a physician. This role requires critical care/step-down experience and involves obtaining accurate patient histories, identifying problems, and presenting information to the supervising physician. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of patient care and be able to work collaboratively with physicians to provide high-quality care.
Responsibilities
1. Obtain detailed and accurate patient histories and identify problems to present to the supervising physician.
2. Order or prescribe medication subject to protocols or specific MD directions, and sign own name and license number as well as the supervising physician's.
3. Assist supervising surgeons in the operating room when a qualified assistant physician is not required, and a second assistant is deemed necessary by the supervising surgeon.
4. Assist supervising physicians in procedure rooms when a qualified physician is present and a qualified assistant physician is not needed.
5. Write post-operative/post-procedure notes and orders for supervising physicians.
6. Perform line as a 'first line' person responsible for post-procedure management of patients as requested by the primary physician.
7. Start IVs, insert foley catheters and nasogastric tubes, irrigate foley catheters, order transfusions of blood and products, venipuncture, and debriefments.
8. Participate in research trials collecting, aggregating, and entering data.
9. Identify patient needs and modify and deliver care specific to those needs, including communicating with patients, parents, and/or primary caregivers at their level of understanding.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
1. Successful completion of an approved physician's assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Physician Assistant License.
2. Certification by the National Commission for Certified Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) within one year of initial employment by the Medical Center.
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Nurses:
1. Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing.
2. Master's degree.
3. Maintains clinical competencies through participating in continuing educational programs (contact hours per year) and clinical practice as mandated by the Board of Nursing and national certification body.
4. Experience in relevant patient care settings or as regulations dictate.
5. In collaborative agreement with physicians on staff, fulfills terms of collaborative agreement.
Licenses and Certifications Required for Nurses:
1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
2. Advance Practice Nurse License.
3. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
4. Maintains national or board certification as appropriate in area of specialty.
