Job Title: Library Assistant

Join the Ann Arbor District Library team as a Library Assistant and provide exceptional service to our patrons. As a key member of our public service team, you will be responsible for assisting patrons with their information and circulation needs, as well as supporting library events for all ages.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide ready reference services, readers' advisory services, and general information about the library and its services to patrons in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Serve the public by checking-out and checking-in library materials, collecting fees, issuing library cards, and handling cash register transactions with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Answer library users' questions and handle everyday problems involving interpretation of the library's procedures to provide the best possible service for patrons of all ages.
  • Monitor the appearance of the public areas during assigned shifts and perform opening and closing procedures for the public desks at assigned locations.
  • Provide support at library events for all ages and assist users in gaining access to computing resources and resolving library hardware, software, and/or printing problems.
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks, which may include pulling library materials and/or preparing materials for programs and displays.
  • Serve on system-wide work groups and attend meetings as assigned.
  • Maintain a prompt and reliable attendance record.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six or more months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong commitment to excellent public service, helpful, friendly, proactive, and adaptable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public utilizing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to acknowledging and welcoming each library patron utilizing AADL facilities as well as attending AADL events.
  • Experience with and comfort in using and troubleshooting computers, printers, and photocopiers as well as a basic knowledge of commonly used computer software.
  • Ability to work standing up for extended periods of time as well as to move around as necessary while transitioning efficiently between tasks with continued attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team without direct supervision.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment skills and utilize interpersonal skills when necessary to work effectively with library users, staff, and visitors.
  • Ability to complete detailed work accurately.
