Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public works projects, public parks grounds, athletic fields, and associated right-of-way/public property maintenance duties.
  • Operate mowers, edgers, weed eaters, sprayers, chain saws, concrete saws, pumps, patching machines, tamping devices, pitchforks, trowels, shovels, and other simple machines and equipment.
  • Perform landscape installation tasks such as grading, leveling, and installation of retention walls.
  • Install, repair, and maintain sidewalks, curb and gutter, and fences, including backstops, clean out drainage lines, manholes, and catch basins.
  • Operate motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,000 pounds or more, including dump trucks, asphalt spreaders, tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, weed machines, street sweepers, and heavy rollers.
  • Operate and make minor repairs to various small equipment, such as portable rod motors, rodding machines, winches, gasoline-powered tamps, pavement breakers, pipe saws, pneumatic-powered tamps, grinders, manual pipe cutters, chainsaws, mowers, weed eaters, edgers, and trimmers.
  • Provide input to the Crew Leader in making estimates of materials needed for the job.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Perform related work as required.
Requirements:
  • Must be able to perform manual labor.
  • Must be able to read and write English.
  • Six (6) months of previous work experience in general maintenance or construction - preferred.

  • A valid Class B or higher commercial driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Registration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Clearinghouse is required prior to appointment.
  • Must qualify for, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
