Job Overview

The Model Shop Lead plays a pivotal role in leading and managing the technical operations of our R&D machine shop. This role involves developing advanced methods for processing intricate, low-volume engine components with experimental materials while ensuring a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of 2-3 machinists by providing expert guidance, training, and support to achieve high productivity and adhere to stringent quality standards.
  2. Planning and Coordination: Work collaboratively with engineering, engine build, and materials planning teams to strategically schedule and prioritize work orders to maintain on-time delivery to our internal customers.
  3. Quality Control and Improvement: Design, implement, and maintain robust quality control processes to enhance the success rate of new and existing projects.
  4. Workflow Optimization: Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for all machine shop activities.
  5. Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure all machinery is properly maintained, calibrated, and serviced, minimizing downtime and ensuring precision in all operations.
  6. Safety Compliance: Enforce and uphold safety protocols, ensuring all team members adhere to safety regulations.
  7. Training and Development: Design and facilitate comprehensive training programs to enhance machinists' skills in programming, manufacturing, and measurement.
  8. Effective Communication: Maintain clear and open communication channels with other departments.
  9. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate records of production activities, machine maintenance, and quality control measures.
  10. Budget Management: Assist in developing and managing the machine shop budget.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications or technical training preferred.
  • Proven experience as a Tool Maker or Model Maker, with a strong background in new product development.
  • Extensive knowledge of machining processes, CNC programming, and related technologies.
  • Demonstrated hands-on leadership ability with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and quality control standards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and implementing process improvements.
