UPMC is seeking a dedicated full-time Laboratory Support Technician. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain diverse experience across various departments through comprehensive training. The role involves working night shifts from Sunday to Thursday.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responds to phone inquiries, investigates specimen status, and directs callers to appropriate resources.
- Receives, organizes, prepares, and delivers specimens ready for testing to designated work areas.
- Exhibits a service-oriented mindset by demonstrating courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive demeanor in all interactions.
- Conducts routine maintenance on instruments as per established protocols and records temperatures when necessary.
- Assists in restocking supplies to ensure optimal inventory levels and maintains organized storage for various supplies.
- Prepares and replenishes reagents and consumables for instruments and performs quality assurance/quality control procedures as assigned.
- Supports specimen and slide storage and retrieval, monitors pending work lists, and addresses any unprocessed tasks.
- Ensures cleanliness of work areas, maintains a tidy environment, and keeps glassware clean and dry.
- Prepares specimens for analysis at workstations, including creating worklists, verifying specimen acceptability, aliquoting, and managing specimen loading/unloading on instruments.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical laboratory setting.
- OR an Associate degree (with coursework in biology and chemistry) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical laboratory.
- OR Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification along with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical laboratory.
- OR successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course.
- OR a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in biological or clinical laboratory science.
- OR currently enrolled in a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or equivalent training program, with at least 3 years of college credits completed.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification (ASCP) or equivalent is preferred.
A valid driver's license may be required based on departmental needs.
