Position Overview
The Clinical Nurse Specialist delivers expert nursing care to patients in designated areas, employing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administers nursing care in accordance with medical directives and nursing interventions tailored to patients' conditions, adhering to established standards, policies, and procedures. * Initiates assessments based on patients' presenting issues, physician diagnoses, and functional health frameworks. * Gathers essential information from patients, families, and medical reports. Ensures all necessary consents for treatment/procedures are obtained and that identification protocols are followed. * Establishes nursing diagnoses and care priorities, focusing on patient education, discharge planning, and developmental needs. * Identifies applicable standards of care and practice for each patient. * Records assessments, including nursing diagnoses and clinical judgments. * Demonstrates proficiency in technical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills to deliver care, maintain clinical competency, and address age-specific patient needs.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments in line with outpatient and nursing policies based on patient conditions: * Adjusts care priorities as new information arises, * Continuously updates nursing diagnoses, and * Engages family and significant others in assessment processes.
  • Plans and implements care for assigned patients. * Executes therapeutic nursing interventions as prescribed by the physician * In accordance with primary and population-specific care standards * Considering insights gained from initial and ongoing patient assessments * In alignment with nursing division policies, demonstrated competencies, and risk management practices * Consistent with unit-specific requirements: * Completes comprehensive history and physical assessments * Administers medications, treatments, and immunizations * Prepares patients for examinations/procedures; positions and drapes them appropriately * Implements pain management strategies * Assists during examinations/procedures * Monitors patient responses during treatments (checks vital signs) * Initiates corrective actions based on monitoring data indicating adverse symptoms * Coordinates patient referrals * Provides patient education.
  • Documents care in accordance with established standards and clinical priorities, including: * Assessment findings and ongoing evaluations * Updated clinical priorities for documentation * Therapeutic nursing interventions with a focus on patient education * Patient responses to interventions and progress towards outcomes.
  • Responds to medical emergencies and participates in CPR/BLS as necessary.
  • Educates patients and families on managing diseases/conditions. Develops and implements patient education plans, including objectives, content, teaching methods, and evaluations of patient progress.
  • Maintains patient medical records; documents patient status and care provided; performs charting duties; records activities and observations. Utilizes electronic health record systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Collaborates with patients, families, and hospital staff to address all aspects of patient needs in a courteous and responsive manner, adhering to iRESPECT Standards and promoting patient satisfaction.
  • Provides guidance, assigns tasks, and supervises LPNs and other support staff in conducting initial and ongoing patient assessments and providing clinical assistance as required. Assists in orienting and supervising new staff members and students during their training.
  • Transports monitored patients, specimens, equipment, and supplies across various departments.
  • Works with forensic teams and security to ensure a safe environment for patients in custody.
  • Completes mandatory training and education, including department-specific requirements. * Attends staff meetings, mandatory in-services, and additional continuing education as required. * Contributes to the annual review of unit-based scope statements and identifies critical aspects of care for clinical review. * Assists in developing indicators, thresholds, study methods, and data collection as assigned. * Addresses opportunities for care improvement. * Engages in and supports the organization's performance improvement initiatives. * Maintains competencies required for the position.
  • Ensures a clean, organized, and safe environment for patients and staff. Complies with established policies, quality improvement standards, and safety protocols.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary records, reports, and files for administrative and compliance purposes.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Preferred
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support certification required
  • Experience in providing care in an inpatient setting. Qualified by education, training, or experience to work with various patient populations as specialty assignment dictates. Required
