Job Responsibilities:
As a Public Safety Officer, your duties will include:
• Patroling assigned areas by foot or in a patrol car to provide protection of life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances
• Responding to emergency radio calls and investigating accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc.
• Conducting follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shifts, seeking out and questioning victims, witnesses, and suspects, developing leads and tips, searching scenes for clues, analyzing evidence, arresting offenders, and preparing cases for testimony
• Serving warrants, subpoenas, and other writs, providing directions and general assistance to the public, investigating complaints of traffic violations or criminal activity, enforcing traffic safety regulations, issuing citations to violators, performing booking of arrestees, including fingerprinting, photographing, completing paperwork, and securing personal property
• Testifying in court proceedings, preparing reports on incidents and maintaining records or logs of the same, informing merchants of vital information necessary to control incidents of vandalism, shoplifting, and burglary, observing inmates in cells to assure prisoners' well-being and adherence to regulations and rules, maintaining identification records of incarcerated individuals, answering telephones and responding appropriately, receiving and relaying or recording messages for department personnel, and issuing citations to violators of traffic laws
Requirements:
To be eligible for this position, you must have a high school graduate or GED equivalent and completion of Police Academy training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. You must also possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid SC Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state, meet Department's physical standards, have successfully completed basic law enforcement training and possess certification as law enforcement officer from SC Criminal Justice Academy, and successfully complete periodic training programs, both internal and external.
