Overview:
The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical team by performing various technical tasks to assist in the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. This includes preparing the surgical site in accordance with established hospital protocols, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques, and actively monitoring for any potential breaches in sterile practices. The Surgical Technologist also provides emotional support and comfort to patients, respecting their privacy and dignity throughout the process. Responsibilities include transporting patients to and from the Operating Room and positioning them appropriately based on the surgical procedure. Additionally, the technologist is responsible for identifying and managing biological specimens and preparing the Operating Room by organizing instruments, supplies, and equipment according to the specific requirements of each case.
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels (CSRH-NB) is a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that is dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of the community. With a focus on innovative medical practices and advanced technology, the hospital offers a wide range of services, including orthopedic and surgical care, rehabilitation, emergency services, and comprehensive heart care, ensuring high-quality patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Adhere to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, demonstrating leadership qualities in self-management and teamwork.
• Under the supervision of a registered nurse, execute all tasks related to direct patient care and support in the Operating Room before and during surgical procedures.
• Proficiently scrub in multiple specialty areas, including but not limited to: Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, and Robotics, is highly desirable.
• Establish and maintain a sterile environment, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon as needed.
• Utilize the physician preference card as a guideline for case preparation and ensure that these cards are regularly updated.
• Collaborate effectively with the surgical team to provide optimal patient care.
• Maintain a safe and sterile environment by consistently applying technical and aseptic practices.
• Exhibit clinical proficiency in the management of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Follow Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and staff during all procedures.
• Demonstrate competence in monitoring and controlling the surgical environment, adhering to established policies for traffic control and sanitation.
• Familiarize oneself with facility protocols regarding the decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies.
• Adapt patient care methods to meet the diverse needs of the patient population served by the department.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a surgical setting is preferred.
- BLS certification is required.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or possess an LVN/LPN License.
