Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding career in highway maintenance and construction? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking experienced individuals to join our team as Maintenance Operators.
Job Summary:We are seeking individuals who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment, perform manual labor, and respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events. As a Maintenance Operator, you will be responsible for:
- Responding to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
- Attending work zone training, preparing work zones, and performing traffic control
- Demonstrating proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, making suggestions for improvement, wearing proper personal protection equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety rules and regulations
- Participating as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
- Completing pre-trip inspections, performing preventive maintenance, and operating power tools and light to heavy equipment
To be considered for this position, you must have:
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods and procedures
- Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions
