Maintenance Operator

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding career in highway maintenance and construction? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking experienced individuals to join our team as Maintenance Operators.

We are seeking individuals who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment, perform manual labor, and respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events. As a Maintenance Operator, you will be responsible for:

• Responding to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
• Attending work zone training, preparing work zones, and performing traffic control
• Demonstrating proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, making suggestions for improvement, wearing proper personal protection equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety rules and regulations
• Participating as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
• Completing pre-trip inspections, performing preventive maintenance, and operating power tools and light to heavy equipment

To be considered for this position, you must have:

• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods and procedures
• Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions
