Job Summary:
The Histotechnologist role at Corewell Health is crucial in performing specialized procedures in the Histopathology lab. This position involves performing IHC and DIF procedures, Enzyme Histochemistry, grossing of small biopsies, and contributing to laboratory education.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Embeds and properly orients surgical, autopsy, and cytology cell block tissue for microtomy.
- Cuts routine tissue specimens according to defined protocols.
- Performs routine and special staining of microscopic tissue sections.
- Assists the Pathologist with OR frozen section cases.
- May perform Immunoperoxidase staining, microtomy of FFPE tissue independently, as well as Direct Immunofluorescent staining, including flash freezing and cutting, of fresh biopsies.
- Prepares fresh tissue biopsies for enzyme histochemical procedures using cryotechniques.
- Performs and troubleshoots all enzyme histochemical procedures.
- Under the supervision of the pathologist performs grossing of small biopsies.
- Assists in teaching in the Histotechnologist school, including Laboratory Demonstrations, Lectures, and preparation for laboratory assignments.

Standard Qualifications:
To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to fulfill each essential duty satisfactorily.
A minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, or equivalent is required. Preference is given to applicants who have attended an accredited NAACLS Histotechnology program. Histotechnologist (ASCP) certification or certification eligibility, with the requirement to pass the exam within one year of hire, is also necessary.
Additional qualifications include participating in Quality Improvement/Process Improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department; staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO); assisting in training new hires as assigned; and attending staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned. Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely, as well as mindful use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and observation of wasteful supplies, are also expected.
