Job Summary

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for technical work involving the application of radio nuclides to various designated portions of the body to assist physicians in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Positions and instructs patients in preparation for the application of radio nuclides using specialized equipment and procedures.
  • Makes adjustments to nuclear equipment to correct setting for each examination as prescribed by the attending physician.
  • Handles emergency situations and troubleshoots equipment failure, making repairs where possible.
  • Reviews the PACS processing of nuclear medicine and prepares and maintains records and files of procedures.
  • Purges outdated files, as directed, and requisitions supplies as needed.
  • Consults with referring physicians as required and may assist in providing training and technical direction to lower level technicians and nurses in nuclear procedures and processes.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relations with medical and nursing staff to insure adequate and timely servicing of patients.
  • May be requested to assist in the development of techniques for procedures and may assist in the use of a variety of equipment and procedures not routinely employed.
  • Participates in continuing education programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology and effectively uses automated systems to perform work assignments.
Qualifications/Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess good knowledge of the modern procedures used in the performance of nuclear medicine examinations for diagnostic purposes, as well as good knowledge of the operation of all types of nuclear equipment.

They will also have good knowledge of human anatomy, required safety precautions in the operation and use of equipment, and the ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions.

Additionally, the candidate will have the ability to direct and instruct others, handle sick and injured patients properly, and effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments.

They will also possess thoroughness, reliability, good judgment, and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

The candidate must possess certification and maintain current registration with either the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
