Senior Clinical Coding Specialist

The MD Anderson Center is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Coding Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our coding team, you will be responsible for analyzing medical records and abstracting clinical data to assign codes from patient records in accordance with coding classification systems.
Key Responsibilities
• Analyze medical records and abstract clinical data to assign codes from patient records in accordance with coding classification systems
• Review patient encounters for accurate code assignment of all relevant diagnosis, present on admission, patient safety indicators, and procedures
• Enter appropriate codes into the 3M encoder hospital's mainframe computer for the transfer of data to billing files for reimbursement
• Query physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes
• Serve as a resource for other departments users related to the abstracted coded data
Requirements
• Associate's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field
• Five years of clinical coding experience for complex or multi-specialties, with preferred degree, three years of clinical coding experience for complex or multi-specialties
• One or more of the following certifications: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder - Associate (CPC-A), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
Working Conditions
This position requires working in an office environment, with occasional exposure to human/animal blood, body fluids, or tissues, and may require working in a patient care unit.
Physical Demands
This position requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching, lifting/carrying up to 10 lbs, and using a computer/keyboard.
