Job Description:Role Overview:This position requires a skilled Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to provide high-quality care to mothers and newborns in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities:- Pre-Labor and Admission Assessment:
- Conduct thorough assessments of pregnant women to identify potential risks and develop individualized care plans.
- Monitor fetal well-being through non-stress tests, fetal heart rate monitoring, and physical exams.
- Provide education on labor and delivery processes, pain management options, and postpartum care.
- Labor Support and Monitoring:
- Continuously monitor labor progress, vital signs, and fetal heart rate patterns to ensure optimal care.
- Administer medications as prescribed and manage pain relief options.
- Provide emotional support and comfort measures throughout the labor process.
- Assisting with Delivery:
- Collaborate with obstetricians and midwives during vaginal deliveries, providing instrumentation assistance and ensuring a safe environment.
- Participate in cesarean section procedures by maintaining a sterile field and assisting with the delivery process.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation and initial assessment of newborn health immediately after delivery.
- Postpartum Care:
- Monitor mother and newborn health during the immediate postpartum period, assessing vital signs, bleeding, and uterine tone.
- Support breastfeeding efforts, teaching proper latch techniques and addressing concerns related to infant care.
- Provide education on postpartum recovery, self-care, and newborn care, including diapering, bathing, and recognizing signs of illness.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, interventions, medications, and patient progress in the electronic health record.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and legal standards through timely and accurate documentation.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with healthcare teams to plan and implement individualized care for each patient.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families about labor progress, potential complications, and available options.
- Infection Control and Safety:
- Maintain a safe and sterile environment for labor, delivery, and postpartum care by following infection control procedures.
- Ensure all equipment used during labor and delivery is properly sterilized and functioning.
- Emergency and High-Risk Situations:
- Recognize signs of complications, such as fetal distress, preeclampsia, and hemorrhage, and initiate appropriate interventions or escalate care as needed.
- Respond to obstetric emergencies, utilizing protocols and teamwork to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Administer medications and interventions for high-risk pregnancies, managing complications like hypertension and infections.
- Patient Education and Advocacy:
- Provide education and support to patients and families regarding labor, delivery options, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.
- Advocate for patient preferences and informed decision-making, ensuring patients have access to necessary resources.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A current RN license in good standing.
- 1-2 years of Labor and Delivery experience.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week, including nights and weekends.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
