Role of the Surgical Technologist
Surgical Technologists (ST) are essential allied health professionals who play a critical role in the preparation and care of surgical patients across all age groups, from infants to the elderly, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
The ST is skilled in sterile techniques and possesses a thorough understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools necessary to assist surgeons during invasive diagnostic and therapeutic operations.
In addition to operating room duties, STs may also work in outpatient settings, demonstrating proficiency in both preoperative and postoperative patient care.
Responsibilities
- Maintain sterile environments and ensure the surgical team adheres to sterile protocols.
- Prepare the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist in patient preparation for examinations and procedures in the surgical clinic.
- Support physicians during patient evaluations and procedures.
- Handle patient communications and assist with medical record updates under supervision.
- Participate in the training of new surgical technologists and students.
- Exhibit effective communication with patients, healthcare staff, and physicians.
Qualifications
Applicants should be graduates of an accredited Surgical Technology program or possess a valid Surgical Technologist certification (NCCT or NBSTSA). Alternatively, candidates may provide proof of completion of a relevant training program through the United States Military.
This position is suitable for entry-level candidates with up to 18 months of experience or those with relevant military experience.
Work Environment
Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to adapt to dynamic situations and work efficiently under pressure. Adherence to safety standards and organizational policies is essential.
