Position Overview

The role entails overseeing all aspects of driver training within the CDL program on campus. CDL Instructors are expected to have substantial experience in the field, exceptional communication abilities, and demonstrate the physical, intellectual, and leadership skills necessary for on-road, range, and classroom instruction.

CDL Instructors operate under the direction of the Director of Education, Program Director, or designated personnel.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include:
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 3 years of on-the-road experience within the last 5 years
  • Valid CDL-A License
  • Capability to pass our road test, as applicable
  • Current DOT medical card
  • As an operator of Class A equipment, ability to pass DOT drug tests upon hire and continuously thereafter
  • Physical ability to enter and exit tractors, lift up to 50 lbs., and remain on your feet outdoors for 8-10 hours daily
  • Availability to work weekends (Saturday & Sunday) as required

  • Exhibit enthusiasm and a collaborative spirit
  • Engage with students and colleagues in a respectful and positive manner
  • Provide fair and impartial treatment to all students
  • Notify in advance regarding any lateness, absences, or vacation plans during substitute assignments
  • Fulfill administrative duties as required
  • Keep accurate and current records of student progress, performance, and attendance using institutional tools and technology
  • Demonstrate flexibility in meeting the instructional needs of the school
  • Deliver educational content effectively
  • Train students in all facets of trucking and driving
  • Administer written assessments on classroom material and evaluate student performance
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of tractor-trailers
  • Instruct on air-brake tests
  • Teach straight-line backing techniques
  • Guide students through 45-degree alley-docking
  • Instruct on parallel parking techniques – both sight side and blind side
  • Utilize effective teaching methods, including eye contact, voice modulation, and varied questioning techniques
  • Draw upon personal experiences to enhance learning
  • Availability to work weekends (Saturday and Sunday) as needed
