Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville seeks a dedicated Academic Advisor to join its Student Advising and Academic Resources (STARS) office. As an Academic Advisor, you will work closely with students to help them achieve their academic goals and provide ongoing support for their learning journey. Your role will involve engaging students in decision-making processes, promoting responsible choices, and maintaining accurate student records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising:
    • Provide expert guidance on educational options and academic requirements.
    • Assist students in identifying their interests, skills, and values to match suitable fields of study or career options.
    • Develop and implement academic advising events, such as workshops and panel discussions.
    • Maintain confidentiality and accuracy in student records and respond to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
  • Academic Coaching:
    • Work one-on-one with students to develop effective learning strategies and become self-regulated learners.
    • Motivate students to overcome obstacles and achieve academic success.
    • Help students set and work towards individual goals.
  • Navigate:
    • Assign case owners and case managers for open alerts.
    • Oversee the completion of open cases.
    • Assist with retention work related to Navigate.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, communication, education, psychology, student services, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in advising, academic coaching, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Competence in presenting to large and small groups.
  • Proficient in software applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Awareness of FERPA and ethical principles in working with students.
