The Nurse Specialist at Christus Health is a highly skilled and experienced nursing professional who practices independently and demonstrates a deep understanding of all relevant aspects of a clinical situation. - Provide nursing care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients, consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.
- Address increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families in accordance with their level of practice.
- Administer medications and treatments, monitor for side effects and effectiveness of treatment prescribed, and document patient history, symptoms, medication, and care given.
- Assess learning needs and provide education to patients, family members, and/or caregivers, identifying issues and resources.
- Use critical thinking skills to assess the basic physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and development needs of patients and families.
- Communicate findings to appropriate healthcare team members.
- Develop and use a specific plan of care and modify it to meet individual patient needs using evidence-based practice.
- Implement patient care and therapeutic procedures, monitor and document progression of treatment and teaching goals.
- Evaluate the care and treatment(s) provided to the patient and the patient response to the care and treatment(s).
- Perform timely reassessment and documentation.
- Must be able to perform unit-specific competencies based on the specific patient care needs for the designated unit's patient population.
- Anticipate and plan for admission/discharge/transfer needs to facilitate patient flow.
- Utilize appropriate systems of communication and tools to facilitate the discharge process.
- Coach on tools and techniques for checking, cross-checking, and validating orders to ensure accuracy.
- Plan, direct, and evaluate the overall nursing care and functions in a particular nursing unit during an assigned shift.

- Review patients' charts for completion and accuracy; identify and alert to mistakes or omissions.
- Recognize unexpected readings and alert nursing or medical staff.
- Relate examples of mis-readings or misinterpretations and lessons learned.
- Review, discuss, and validate own interpretation with others.
- Share experiences with ensuring safety for one or more patient groups or settings.
- Explain key features of safety guidelines and procedures for those groups and settings.

- Recognize and address physiological and psychological signs of problems.

- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, preferred.
- 1 year of experience in the related nursing specialty preferred.
- BLS required.
- RN License in state of employment or compact.
