Nursing Supervisor

The primary purpose of this position is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility. This role must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be required by the DON or Administrator, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure nursing care is provided through assessment, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care.
- Make frequent rounds to note resident/patient conditions and to ensure nursing personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
- Give and receive the nursing report upon reporting in and ending shift duty hours.
- Ensure assigned work area (i.e. nurse station, med. Cart, medication room, etc.), resident/patient care rooms and treatment areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.
- Ensure medication rooms and medication carts are locked according to regulation.
- Monitor supplies and order as needed.
- Attend regularly conducted staff meetings as scheduled by the Director of Nursing.
- Manage and participate regularly in continuing education in-service programs.
- Assist the Director of Nursing in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
- Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
- Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the DON as necessary and required, concerning the operation of the nursing services department.
- Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents' total regimen of care.
- Ensure that all nursing services personnel comply with their respective job descriptions.
- Participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility's quality assurance quality improvement program for the nursing service department.
- Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.
- Assist the DON in planning the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan as necessary.
- Meet with the nursing staff, as well as support personnel, in planning the department's services, programs, and activities.
- Assist with and/or admits transfer, and discharge residents as required.
- Complete accident/incident reports or investigation as necessary.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
- Provide staff training to nursing department members, residents and/or family members on policies and procedures as directed by the DON.
- Ensure that thorough, accurate communication takes place between nursing shifts to facilitate follow up on resident care needs.
- Conduct shift meetings with nurses and nursing assistants.
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignment etc.
- Ensure that rooms are ready for new admissions.
- Greets newly admitted residents upon admission. Escorts them to their rooms as necessary.
- Make rounds at least three (3) times during the shift.
- Notify the resident's attending physician and next-of-kin when there is a change in the resident's condition.
- Monitor residents on a daily basis in order to observe and evaluate each resident's physical and emotional status.
- Ensure that direct nursing care be provided by a licensed nurse, a certified nursing assistant, and/or a nurse aide trainee qualified to perform the procedure.
- Ensure that counts for controlled drugs policies are followed.
- Participate in marketing events.
- Participate in the Interdisciplinary Plan of Care (IPOC) process as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
