Job Summary

As a Patient Care Technician Trainee, you will attend scheduled classes and clinical rotations in a Nursing Assistant program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. This program prepares you to safely perform delegated nurse functions with clients of any age and various levels of physical, sensory, motor, and emotional ability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify the nursing assistant's role in relation to the healthcare workplace and perform delegated nursing functions.
  • Demonstrate infection control techniques and provide a safe environment for patients, caregivers, and others.
  • Apply basic observational recording and reporting skills, and individualize care to meet the needs of patients.
  • Describe the ethical and legal issues affecting the work of the nursing assistant and perform personal grooming and hygiene tasks.
  • Assist patients with nutritional needs, obtain intake and output data, and record/report results.
  • Utilize EPIC patient care documentation and position patients for ambulation and range of motion exercises.
  • Define ADLs, assist patients with toileting, and demonstrate a basic understanding of disease process and chronic vs. acute illness.
  • Prepare patients for surgery and care for them afterwards, and compare and contrast the features of acute and long-term care.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, and active enrollment in a Nursing Assistant program approved by the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • Previous customer service experience, and availability to attend training classes and clinical rotations.
  • The ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology, and effectively convey verbal and written information.
  • The ability to follow directions, perform simple mathematical calculations correctly, and respond to emergency situations appropriately.
  • The ability to adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the hospital, and effectively function as a member of a collaborative team.
Working Conditions

This role requires working in a fast-paced healthcare environment, with exposure to substantial temperature changes, high noise levels, and contact with bodily fluids. You will also be required to wear protective equipment, including latex gloves, and travel between system locations.
