Key Responsibilities- Initiate and manage comprehensive nutritional care for inpatients and outpatients within assigned service lines, ensuring alignment with evidence-based practice (EBP) nutrition research.
- Conduct nutrition screenings and assessments in accordance with established protocols to identify each patient's specific nutrient requirements, developing and documenting tailored nutrition care plans.
- Evaluate the appropriateness of diet orders for modified diets and enteral feedings, adhering to the guidelines established by the hospital's medical leadership.
- Supervise the assignment of nutrition interventions and other departmental tasks to Dietetic Technicians (DTR), ensuring compliance with accepted nutrition standards.
- Review modified menus for in-patient units to ensure they meet the individual nutrition care plans based on age, development, and medical needs.
- Monitor nutrient intake of patients as directed, utilizing clinical expertise to recommend modifications or supplementation as necessary.
- Provide education to patients and caregivers regarding specific dietary modifications and general nutrition, adapting materials for home use.
- Act as a consultant for nutrition-related inquiries from patients, caregivers, and medical staff.
- Engage in patient care conferences and team rounds to enhance communication and improve patient care quality.
- Oversee patients receiving enteral nutrition therapy, evaluating their response and documenting necessary recommendations.
- Contribute to the development and assessment of departmental goals aimed at enhancing patient care.
- Serve as a mentor to dietetic students, guiding their involvement in patient care and providing constructive feedback.
- Share knowledge on nutrition-related topics with various medical and nursing staff, maintaining current evidence-based knowledge.
- Participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and hospital committees as needed.
- Engage in professional development activities to maintain licensure and enhance skills.
- Demonstrate RD, LD competencies annually and complete mandatory educational requirements.
- Collaborate with Nutrition Services staff to coordinate patient food preferences and ensure appropriate dietary practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. A Bachelor's degree in nutrition, registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), and licensure to practice as a dietitian from the Ohio Board of Dietetics; or a licensed permit with completion of the RD exam within three months of employment.
2. A minimum of one year of clinical experience as a registered and licensed dietitian post-internship is required, with pediatric experience preferred.
3. Strong analytical and organizational skills to assess patients' nutritional needs and develop appropriate care plans.
4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for educating patients, families, and hospital staff, as well as documenting patient care activities.
5. Effective interpersonal skills for engaging with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary medical team.
