Position Overview

The School of Aviation at Southern Illinois University is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Flight Instructor at the Assistant Instructor level within the Aviation Flight program. This is a non-tenure track faculty position focused on delivering high-quality flight instruction to students pursuing their aviation education.

Key Responsibilities

Flight Instructors will be tasked with:
  • Delivering personalized flight training to students enrolled in Aviation Flight courses, including conducting preflight and post-flight inspections, as well as maintaining accurate training records for assigned students.
  • Supporting faculty in the instruction of aeronautical and aircraft systems courses that lead to FAA Pilot Certificates and Ratings.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by the Chief Flight Instructor, while adhering to all relevant university, FAA, accreditation, and collective bargaining policies.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Possession of an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating.
  • Holding an FAA Certified Flight Instructor-Airplane Single Engine Certificate (CFI).
Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following:
  • Have earned a bachelor's degree by the date of hire, and
  • Obtain a Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane Certificate within four months of the date of hire. Candidates may not serve as "Instructor of Record" for any Aviation courses until the CFII is obtained. Failure to earn the CFII in a timely manner may affect contract renewal.
OR
  • Have a minimum of 50 hours of documented flight instruction experience as a flight instructor, and
  • Possess a Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with FAR141 regulations within a university flight program.
  • Possession of a Master's degree.

Applicants must submit a complete application, including a cover letter, resume/CV, and copies of any FAA certificates held. If applicable, unofficial transcripts for bachelor's and/or master's degrees may be included, but official transcripts must be provided prior to the date of hire.
