Role Summary
The Operating Room Nurse Supervisor is accountable for overseeing patient care delivery. This role involves coordinating the activities of the operating room staff and the Sterile Processing department. The supervisor collaborates closely with physicians, the Medical Director, the PACU Charge Nurse, the Clinical Director, and the Executive Director on all operational matters. This position is essential in ensuring compliance with facility policies and regulations while meeting patient needs. The supervisor also plays a key role in fostering teamwork and positive workplace relationships, conducting job evaluations, and facilitating staff orientation and education.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to all responsibilities outlined for Registered Nurses.
Assessment Duties
- Evaluate staffing requirements based on scheduled procedures and patient needs, ensuring an appropriate mix of skills and personnel.
- Continuously monitor the daily schedule and adjust staffing assignments to optimize patient care and operational efficiency.
- Identify educational needs of staff and provide recommendations for professional development.
- Assist in managing equipment and supply needs in collaboration with the Materials Manager, ensuring compliance with purchasing contracts.
- Track employee performance and provide feedback to the Clinical Director as necessary.
- Support the development of the Quality Improvement Program within the assigned clinical area, collaborating with the Clinical Director and staff to analyze data and implement improvement strategies.
- Communicate assessments and recommendations to the Clinical Director promptly.
Planning Responsibilities
- Develop staffing plans that align with identified needs and communicate schedules to staff in advance.
- Organize educational sessions for staff, assisting them in achieving their professional goals.
- Ensure timely availability of necessary equipment and supplies for scheduled procedures.
Implementation Duties
- Assign staffing based on planned needs and available personnel, demonstrating flexibility in response to changes.
- Create and document educational offerings for staff and physicians, conducting regular training sessions during staff meetings.
- Ensure the provision of required equipment and supplies as per planned needs.
- Assist the Clinical Director in evaluating employee performance.
- Monitor the quality of patient care, coordinating interventions and reporting outcomes to the Administrator.
- Act as a resource for physicians, staff, and students, providing guidance and support.
- Facilitate effective communication of significant information to the Clinical Director.
- Encourage collaborative decision-making and problem-solving within the unit.
- In partnership with the Clinical Director, support the achievement of unit goals aligned with the organization's objectives.
- Oversee operations of the assigned clinical units in the absence of the Clinical Director.
Evaluation Responsibilities
- Demonstrate accountability through sound decision-making and nursing judgment.
- Engage in Quality Improvement Program activities, including data collection, analysis, and implementation of improvement plans.
Additional Responsibilities
- Act as a resource for colleagues, promoting a collaborative work environment.
- Comply with OSHA guidelines and maintain safety protocols.
- Participate in the orientation of new employees and students.
- Attend staff meetings and educational opportunities regularly.
- Exhibit flexibility in meeting the needs of the organization.
- Follow recommended practices and organizational policies consistently.
- Maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders, including patients and vendors.
- Prioritize responsibilities to ensure optimal patient care and resource utilization.
- Maintain required healthcare certifications and respond effectively in emergencies.
- Stay updated on Infection Prevention practices.
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
- Current nursing license and BLS certification required.
- ACLS and PALS certifications must be obtained within six months of hire.
- Minimum of two years of progressive supervisory experience.
- Experience as a registered nurse in an ambulatory surgery center or similar setting.
- Proven ability to stay organized, take initiative, and meet deadlines.
