Purpose and Scope
This position requires a highly organized and systematic individual to perform phlebotomy duties in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients, verifying patient identity, and labeling specimens correctly.
Key Responsibilities
- Use a systematic approach to work, receiving patients courteously and informatively, even during busy periods.
- Consistently obtain proper specimens, verify patient identity, and properly label specimens, understanding the importance of quality specimen integrity.
- Use good judgment when procuring specimens from difficult patients or unusual circumstances, documenting any deviation from standard procedure.
- Prioritize the collection and delivery of stat, urgent, timed orders, and routine orders to the laboratory.
- Maintain and obtain phlebotomy items for blood collection and understand the need for neatness.
- Monitor and use the computer system to track collection batches, outstanding specimen reports, and enter/edit requisitions.
- Exemplify professionalism and a positive attitude, understanding patient confidentiality rights and BVHA scripting and Service Excellence attributes.
- Communicate effectively with customers, interacting well with patients, physicians, and other professionals, and instructing outpatients on specimen collection.
- Understand and comply with organizational and safety policies, practices, and procedures of BVHA.
- Be punctual, present when scheduled, and adhere to attendance policy.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- A valid driver's license required, with the ability to provide own transportation while on duty.
- Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills.
- Organized, able to prioritize, work in a fast-paced environment, and have excellent problem-solving skills.
- Customer-focused, service-oriented, and able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of clinical or anatomical laboratory functions, medical terminology, or science background.
- Associate's degree in an Allied Health field.
- Experience preferred.
- PBT (ASCP) registration.
- Completion of a regionally accredited phlebotomy certificate program.
Physical Demands
This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting, and standing. The associate will be required to walk, bend, and stand up to seven hours a day. The individual must be able to lift twenty to fifty pounds and reach work above the shoulders.
This position is classified 'at risk' for possible occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.).
