Job Overview
As a Boilermaker General Foreman, you will be responsible for supervising a team that inspects for imperfections and repairs boilers, tanks, vats, and pressure vessels, as well as their auxiliary components, following blueprints and specifications using both power and hand tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and mark reference points for structural elements on foundations using master straight edges, squares, transits, and measuring tapes, applying geometric principles.
  • Coordinate with crane operators to lift components into designated positions.
  • Align structural sections to assemble boiler frames, tanks, or vats using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles.
  • Utilize hammers, flame cutters, files, and grinders to smooth irregular edges of components for proper fitting.
  • Securely bolt or arc weld structural components together.
  • Position drums and headers into supports, securing them with bolts or welds.
  • Align water tubes and connect them to drums and headers using tube expanders.
  • Attach casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles, and other fabricated components to the frame using wrenches.
  • Conduct minor maintenance and cleaning tasks with appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Install manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feed water connections in drums to finalize the assembly of water tube boilers.
  • Assist in testing assembled vessels by pressurizing them with water or gas and monitoring for leaks.
  • Repair boilers or tanks in the field by unbolting or cutting out defective sections, straightening plates, installing new tubes, and welding new sections.
  • May involve fastening and caulking vessel sections using pneumatic tools.
  • Potentially line fireboxes with refractory materials.
  • May fabricate components such as stacks and chutes to customize boiler installations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in flame cutting and torch operation.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and project regulations.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to work within precise accuracy standards.
  • Proficient in applying shop mathematics to resolve issues.
  • Capable of planning work and selecting appropriate tools.
  • Adept at comparing and identifying differences in sizes, shapes, and forms of various objects.
  • Ability to visualize objects in three dimensions from technical drawings.
  • Make informed decisions based on measurable criteria.
  • Comfortable working at heights.

Qualifications
Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with several years of relevant experience in the field or a related area. Familiarity with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures is essential. The role relies on established guidelines and requires working under some supervision, with the autonomy to make decisions regarding task completion within set timelines. Generally reports to a supervisor or manager.
