Job Summary:The Licensed Practical Nurse will work under the direction of the Nurse Manager of the Medical Department to provide nursing care to outpatient mental health patients. This role requires a strong understanding of psychiatric principles, procedures, and techniques, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities:- Develop therapeutic relationships with mental health patients and families
- Comply with laws, rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers
- Provide prompt, efficient, and responsive service
- Exercise judgment in answering questions and releasing information
- Analyze and project consequences of decisions and/or recommendations
- Communicate medical and treatment concerns between patients and providers
- Plan and provide nursing care for patients
- Assess and note reactions to psychotropic drugs and other medications
- Arrange further medical attention when necessary
- Assist patients in understanding the nature of mental health and accepting the need for treatment
- Document patient information on medical charts and follow verbal and written orders
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of patient treatments, immunizations, and laboratory results
- Perform administrative assignments, such as maintaining patient records, answering phones, and completing general notes
- Active, non-restricted licensed practical nurse license in Pennsylvania and Virginia, with a compact state license preferred
- 2+ years of practice in a mental health setting, with pediatric nursing experience required
- Professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients
- Social, psychological, and physical factors of mental and emotional disorders
- Medical and psychological terminology
- Medications, including psychotropic drugs, and effects on psychiatric patients
- State of Virginia and Pennsylvania laws and regulations for the nursing profession
- Regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing and the treatment of mental health
- Symptoms and behavior patterns of mental health
- Medical and psychiatric emergency procedures
- Basic computer programs
