POSITION SUMMARY: This role is dedicated to addressing the developmental requirements of children from birth to five years in a group environment. Key responsibilities encompass: designing and executing age-appropriate lesson plans, ensuring a safe and nurturing atmosphere, documenting positive developmental milestones for children, and fostering constructive relationships and communication with families, partner organizations, and program personnel. Guiding classroom assistants, aides, and volunteers to uphold program standards is essential for the success of the Child Development Center.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE CRITERIA:
  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Compliance with Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) regulations
  • Documentation of a negative TB screening and physical examination within the last six months
  • Fulfillment of all KDHE regulations (K.A.R c) PDA Option 1, 2, or 3)
  • CDA Credential or an Associate's degree in Early Childhood or a related field, or an educational plan in progress
  • At least one year of experience in a licensed childcare setting
POST-HIRE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of YMCA New Staff Orientation within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Submission of a current certificate for Infant, Child, and Adult CPR, First Aid, and all KDHE mandated training within 30 days of hire.
  • Completion of all Redwoods Institute Risk Management training prior to the first day of work.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CAPABILITIES:
  • Visual, auditory, and verbal proficiency to communicate effectively and monitor activities
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Capability to bend and squat frequently
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended durations
  • Capacity to perform light physical tasks
  • Maintain a positive demeanor and create an encouraging environment for all
  • Exhibit a neat and professional appearance consistently
JOB EXPECTATIONS:
  • Participation in New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire
  • Adherence to the YMCA mission, vision, and values, demonstrating the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
  • Maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and other required training or obtain them within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to supervise participants effectively and uphold safety standards
  • Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

  • Exhibit maturity, patience, reliability, sound judgment, and a passion for working with children
Lesson Planning:
  • Design and implement developmentally suitable lessons and activities
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans and supply requirements for submission to your Teacher/Director
  • Display current lesson plans in the classroom at all times
  • Create a daily schedule that balances active and quiet activities, as well as individual and group times
  • Organize the classroom to facilitate learning centers and rotate toys regularly
  • Monitor children's developmental progress through observation records, checklists, daily reports, and formal assessments
Family Engagement:
  • Foster positive, open communication with all families
  • Greet parents by name upon arrival and departure
  • Consistently reinforce successes and positive behaviors to parents and children
  • Document and address any behavioral concerns with parents
  • Communicate concerns and provide written documentation to the Director
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences biannually, or more frequently as needed
  • Facilitate classroom activities, participating, modeling, and observing as necessary
Classroom Management:
  • Oversee classroom supplies and equipment in a safe and organized manner
  • Maintain an environment conducive to smooth transitions and independent learning
  • Keep storage areas organized
  • Adhere to the posted cleaning schedule and address additional cleaning needs as they arise
  • Display children's work and educational materials in an orderly fashion
Safety and Cleanliness:
  • Assist with lifting and carrying children as necessary
  • Follow all program guidelines regarding food service, cleanup, and storage
  • Complete accident/incident reports promptly, ensuring proper documentation and communication with parents
  • Support and model discipline practices in accordance with YMCA policies and KDHE regulations
Professionalism:
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions
  • Adhere to the program's dress code
  • Maintain appropriate attendance records
  • Engage with parents, children, and staff with eye contact and a friendly demeanor
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding sensitive information
  • Complete in-service hours as required by KDHE and as requested by the Lead Teacher/Director
  • Meet or exceed all KDHE regulations and CACFP guidelines related to programming for children from birth to six years
  • Represent the YMCA positively to all stakeholders
  • Address concerns and complaints directly with the Teacher/Director to maintain a positive environment
  • Perform any necessary tasks to ensure the efficient and appropriate functioning of the center
