Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Electronics Technician Trainee to join our team at the West Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing beginning-level electronic, telecommunication, and electrical work, or assisting a higher-level electronics technician with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic and electrical equipment for highway illumination, traffic control, traffic signal, traffic counting, materials testing, vehicle weighing, and/or law enforcement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the inspection of electronic, electrical, or telecommunication equipment, including traffic signal systems, two-way base, portable, and mobile radio stations/systems, communications towers, video recording systems, radar, sirens, or lighting systems.
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of traffic signal systems, two-way base, portable, and mobile radio stations/systems, communication towers, video recording systems, radar, sirens, lighting systems, or other electronic/electrical equipment in the field or shop.
  • Repair and calibrate electronic equipment, materials testing devices, and scales at the central laboratory or in the field using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and various hand tools according to the specifications of the manufacturer's manual.
  • Clean, repair, and calibrate permanent and portable electronic, spring-type, or hydraulic scales of weight enforcement crews using voltage, or ohm meters, hand tools, and cleaning materials according to technical requirements of the National Bureau of Standards and the State Division of Labor.
  • Install and/or erect new or repaired electronic or telecommunication equipment, such as traffic signal systems, two-way base, portable, and mobile radio stations/systems, communications towers, video recording systems, radar, sirens, or lighting systems according to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Assist cities and municipalities with the installation and maintenance of traffic control signals and highway lighting systems.
  • Keep records of maintenance performed and materials used.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • One (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in electronics/electrical repair or land mobile radio/microwave equipment repair.
  • Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in electrical/electronics of at least 1080 clock hours may be substituted for the required experience.
  • OR Substitution: A journeyman electrician license may be substituted for the required experience.
  • OR Substitution: Associate's degree in electronics or electrical engineering technology from a regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
