We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technical Assistant to join our team at the SPCA of Wake County. As a key member of our medical team, you will play a vital role in the care and treatment of animals in our shelter and foster care programs.
Responsibilities- Provide medical care and treatment to animals in our shelter and foster care programs, including vaccinations, bloodwork, and medical assessments.
- Assist in surgeries, including prepping before, and monitoring during and after surgery.
- Work closely with our staff veterinarian and surgeon to provide routine health care and medical treatment to animals in our care.
- Ensure that every animal's medical needs are met, and provide compassionate and humane treatment to animals under the guidance of our Medical Team Supervisor.
- Perform laboratory procedures, such as venipuncture, fecal flotation exams, and urinalysis.
- Assist in the scheduling of offsite appointments and communicate with offsite vet clinic staff.
- Coordinate with our foster team to assess foster placement needs for pets, provide education and training as needed, and communicate directly with foster volunteers.
- Provide in-person and telephone customer service to foster volunteers and assist with contacting and scheduling medical appointments for pets in foster.
- Assist in the medical treatment of SPCA animals, including performing and documenting routine health checks, recognizing and properly assessing injured or ill animals, and providing supportive care as needed.
- Maintain medical inventory and supplies, and ensure the daily cleaning and sanitization of the medical treatment area.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital as a veterinary assistant or technician.
- Passion for animal welfare and shelter pets.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with flexibility for fast-paced and changing work environments.
- High degree of professionalism and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and work in a fast-paced environment.
This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high noise levels and exposure to animals of all ages and species. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, and will be able to lift 50 pounds and work in a variety of environments.
