Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Central Utility Plant Operator to join our team at InsideHigherEd. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating, repairing, and maintaining the Central Utility Plant and its associated equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the Central Utility Plant and its associated equipment, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot Building Automation Control Systems (BACS) to identify and resolve issues promptly.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Scheduling and other campus users to ensure proper system programming and schedule updates.
  • Dispatch mechanics in response to critical and non-critical system alarms, and communicate with building occupants as required.
  • Update building operations to ensure maximum energy conservation and promote a safe working environment.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of University personnel to manage utility resources efficiently.
  • Access information utilizing appropriate desktop applications and promote a workplace that encourages safety within the shop and field.
  • May operate a University vehicle and reports to a Zone Supervisor.
Requirements
  • High school diploma, vocational courses, and three years of experience in heating and/or cooling plant operations and maintenance, including chiller experience.
  • VT Fuel Oil Burning Equipment Installer (Limited) Certificate and a VT Natural Gas Certification or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Building Automation Management Systems experience required.
  • Effective verbal communication skills required.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to obtain and driver's check may be required.
  • Experience using computers required.
  • Comfortable in confined spaces and with heights.
  • Specific physical requirements may apply based on job functions.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when performing specific job functions.
Working Conditions
  • This is a bargaining unit position with the United Electrical Workers.
  • A probationary period may be required.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime).
  • External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period.
  • A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees.
  • This position is ineligible for telework due to the essential functions.
  • Background Check required for this position.
  • A post-offer pre-employment (POPE test) physical examination is required.
