Summary
Under general supervision, this role is tasked with conducting thorough examinations and autopsies; evaluating and interpreting investigative data; endorsing official documents; providing expert testimony in legal proceedings; documenting physical evidence through photography; delivering medical insights regarding deceased individuals; and executing related responsibilities as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts external examinations and autopsies, compiling detailed reports on findings.
- Evaluates and interprets data from firearm and toxicology investigations to ascertain cause and manner of death.
- Provides expert testimony in local, state, and federal court as a medical witness.
- Endorses official documents such as death certificates.
- Documents wounds and other physical evidence through photography.
- Assesses the necessity for consultations in odontology and anthropology.
- Offers medical information to law enforcement, legal professionals, and the public.
- Performs additional related duties as required.
- Graduation from an accredited institution with a Doctor of Medicine Degree, accompanied by one (1) year of experience in Forensic Pathology.
- Proficient knowledge of forensic examinations, autopsies, and medical/dental identification procedures; understanding of trauma origins and natural diseases.
- Capability to extract tissue and organ samples; effective communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to interact with individuals in distressing situations; proficiency in operating autopsy equipment and basic office tools.
- Must pass a background investigation from relevant authorities.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
- Possession of a valid Texas Medical License.
- Certification in Anatomic Pathology from the American Board.
- Certification in Forensic Pathology or the ability to obtain it within two (2) years of employment.
- Must have reliable transportation throughout the workday.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Availability for on-call duties 24 hours a day.
- Willingness to work beyond 40 hours during the workweek.
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry 20 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; manual dexterity necessary for operating autopsy equipment and basic office tools.
- Working conditions primarily involve an office environment with frequent exposure to laboratory settings, including hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.
