Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse to join our team at the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. As a Nurse Specialist, you will provide nursing care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ensuring their health and well-being in a residential facility setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care plans.
  • Manage medications and procedures according to pharmacy and nursing procedure guidelines.
  • Document and participate in rehabilitation programs, ensuring the health and well-being of individuals.
  • Function as the health care coordinator of assigned units, responsible for maintaining acute medical issues and ensuring the quality of care.
  • Assist in planning and providing nursing care, ensuring the assessment of nursing needs and the initiation of nursing intervention(s) according to all licensing and certification requirements.
  • Provide guidance and develop nursing staff to ensure quality care and treatment for all individuals.
  • Assess needs of individuals, identifying obvious symptoms of physical or emotional illness, formulate and execute a plan of care, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on the integration of the nursing care plan in the Individual Support Plan (ISP).
  • Perform clinical skills in a competent manner and ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Provide training and act as a resource for nursing staff.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina.
  • Some positions require certification in Basic Life Support and/or Basic/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license.

  • Knowledge of medical and nursing terminology.
  • Ability to adhere to standing orders, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain the confidence and cooperation of individuals.
  • Ability to interact with individuals in a culturally competent and professional manner.
  • Ability to prepare educational and training materials for nursing care programs.
  • Knowledge of administrative methods and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to function as a team member.
  • Ability to instruct, supervise, and direct the work of paraprofessional staff.
  • General knowledge of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Ability to work in a group home-like setting or ICF.
  • Physical ability to work with individuals who may be physically aggressive or medically fragile.
