Job Description


The Patient Monitoring Specialist consistently delivers exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders by exceeding expectations to assist others, radiating positive energy to patients and colleagues, supporting and adhering to Service Excellence Standards, aiming for high standards of medical practice, and actively engaging in initiatives to enhance healthcare for our patients and community.

This role exemplifies CI-CARE in all interactions with patients, peers, and visitors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
*All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise

  • Monitors patient activity as directed by the assigned Registered Nurse; documents EKG readings and accurately calculates rates, PR intervals, and QRS intervals at the start of the shift and as conditions change. Reports any life-threatening dysrhythmias to the appropriate RN immediately. Organizes and labels monitor strips of the patient's rhythm for charting.
  • Handles telephone communications with physicians, admissions, other hospitals, or inter-departmental requests; relays messages to nursing staff and physicians as necessary. Accurately and promptly transcribes physician orders into the computer and unit records.
  • Serves as the communication hub for the unit, ensuring a seamless flow of patient care, assisting nursing staff in keeping families updated on patient status with detailed information provided by physicians or nursing staff. Responds to patient call lights; relays messages to patients, physicians, nursing staff, and other personnel; pages employees and physicians; keeps the unit manager, charge nurse, or supervisor informed of any existing or potential issues.
  • Collects, prepares, and verifies file charts, records, and other documents, performing all clerical tasks necessary for the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients in the nursing unit. Notifies relevant parties such as admissions and housekeeping of actions taken.
  • Maintains the nurses' station by stocking necessary supplies, unpacking, and placing supply orders in the appropriate locations, and obtaining manager signatures on purchase requisitions; assists in maintaining care areas during slower periods.
  • Welcomes and directs visitors using customer service principles, providing them with routine information regarding hospital and unit policies and procedures.
  • Accurately and promptly transcribes physician orders into the computer and unit records.
Job Requirements

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of ProMedica's dysrhythmia course with a minimum passing grade of 85% is necessary.

Skills: Current BCLS certification and other unit/hospital-specific educational requirements. Must possess the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with a diverse range of hospital personnel, patients' families, patients, physicians, and external contacts. Ability to observe monitor screens for extended periods is essential.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Skills: Experience with computer order entry and familiarity with medical/technical terminology.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: As an essential job function, due to the continuously changing patient census/activity and staffing needs, flexibility to work varying schedules is required, which may include overtime (greater than 40 hours per week) and/or shift durations that exceed the assigned status for shift length and/or hours per week. Must be able to work under stressful conditions, remain calm, maintain a fast pace, and ensure accuracy. Physical ability to move freely between work areas, sit, walk, or stand for extended periods, which may include transporting patients, lifting binders, files, etc., and bending or reaching for stored records.
