Position Overview:
As a Certified Oncology Nurse, you will be accountable for providing comprehensive nursing care within the defined scope of practice, adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization, as well as the established nursing process guidelines and standards of care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the ordering and storage of chemotherapy medications, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
- Calculate and confirm the patient's body surface area (BSA) with a qualified health professional to verify the prescribed dosage.
- Prepare patients for chemotherapy administration, monitoring for adverse reactions and ensuring their comfort. Conduct port draws and maintain port sites.
- Manage and maintain chemotherapy administration equipment.
- Ensure proper documentation of chemotherapy waste management.
- Evaluate laboratory results and communicate any abnormalities to the physician.
- Document all procedures performed and interactions with patients.
- Act as a liaison among healthcare personnel, infusion centers, laboratories, and pharmaceutical representatives.
- Provide patient education and respond to inquiries as directed by the physician.
- Triaging patient phone calls and documenting discussions regarding treatment plan changes and follow-up tests in collaboration with the physician.
- Communicate patient concerns and issues to the physician that may affect treatment outcomes.
- Supervise non-licensed personnel and manage office operations in accordance with established protocols.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned within the RN scope of practice.
- Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
- Minimum of one year of experience in oncology nursing.
- Current registered nurse license in the State of Michigan.
- BLS certification or equivalent through military training.
- Completion of an Oncology Nurse Society (ONS) or equivalent Chemotherapy/Biotherapy administration course within six months of employment.
- ONCC Certified Oncology Nurse (OCN) within two years of employment.
