Position Title: Utility Worker I


Role Summary: Engages in complex skilled maintenance or construction tasks and performs related duties as necessary. Responsible for the repair, replacement, and installation of water and sewer pipelines, fire hydrants, and other essential infrastructure. Executes water and sewer connections, repairs and elevates manholes, clears and flushes sewer lines, assists with CCTV operations, and carries out assigned landscaping tasks.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Install and repair water and sewer pipelines.
  • Maintain and clear right-of-ways.
  • Operate various work vehicles and machinery, including dump trucks, backhoes, forklifts, tampers, pipe saws, chainsaws, compaction equipment, and asphalt rollers.
  • Assist with the maintenance of hydrants and valves.
  • Perform routine carpentry and painting tasks.
  • Support pump station repairs and maintenance.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications: Basic understanding of standard office practices and equipment, including GIS systems, as well as proficiency in business English, spelling, and arithmetic. Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting and independently while maintaining positive working relationships. Must possess or be able to obtain certifications in NIMMS training, 16-Hour Asbestos Operation and Maintenance, Intermediate Work Zone Safety, VDOT Flagging, and Confined Space.


Must be willing to undergo training in the operation of construction equipment for the installation and repair of water/wastewater utility systems. Ability to wear a respirator in specific situations is required, and possession of, or the ability to acquire within six months, a CDL, Class A is necessary. No prior experience is needed; training will be provided. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not mandatory. Stand-by, emergency response duty, and overtime may be required.


Salary Range: $39,359 - $47,230
