It is essential that all sections of the application are fully completed. Resumes are supplementary and will not be considered in lieu of a completed application.
Position OverviewAre you seeking a fulfilling career that merges animal welfare with law enforcement? Loudoun County's Department of Animal Services (LCAS) is on the lookout for dedicated individuals to fill the role of Compassionate Animal Protection Officer. Become part of a dynamic team of officers committed to a progressive mission within a supportive community. Each day presents unique challenges and opportunities as we serve a population of 450,000 residents alongside numerous companion animals, livestock, and wildlife.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe ideal candidate will handle a range of service requests and deliver exceptional humane law enforcement services, which include:
- Enforcing local and state regulations.
- Educating the community on responsible animal care.
- Rescuing sick or injured animals across various species, including wildlife.
- Preparing and presenting cases in court on a regular basis.
Work schedules will involve a rotation of early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties. Comprehensive training will be provided in areas such as animal cruelty investigations, firearms handling, equine management, technical animal rescue, courtroom procedures, disaster response, and more. Ensuring our officers are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge to safeguard both animals and citizens is a top priority.
QualificationsApplicants should possess a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma along with four years of relevant experience. A Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field is preferred, as is experience in animal welfare or veterinary services. Familiarity with companion animals and livestock is crucial, and experience with exotic species and wildlife is a plus. A valid driver's license is required, and bilingual proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred, with incentives available for qualified candidates.
Requirements and ConsiderationsThe selected candidate will undergo various background checks, including criminal, fingerprint, credit, and DMV checks, as well as a physical examination that includes drug screening and psychological evaluation. When on-call and utilizing a take-home vehicle, officers must be able to respond from a designated area within specified limits.
This role is physically demanding and may involve exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous substances, and potential injury. A rabies vaccination series will be initiated upon hiring unless prior vaccination documentation is provided. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to manage large and potentially dangerous animals weighing over 100 pounds. Successful candidates will become sworn officers and complete state-mandated training in animal control, as well as obtain certifications in euthanasia, CPR, First Aid, and Incident Command System training.
