Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Radiologic Technologist to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a Radiologic Technologist, you will be responsible for performing radiographic procedures in assigned areas, working under the direction of a technical supervisor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to apply ionizing radiation for Radiologic diagnosis.
  • Assume responsibility for designated areas or procedures as required.
  • Assume the role of Clinic Instructor with student radiographers.
  • Staff will be required to float among radiology clinics associated with BWH as needed.
  • Perform duties such as transporting, transferring, immobilizing, and positioning patients.
  • Calculate and select proper technical factors; operate all equipment as required; acquire and process images; properly identify images with patient I.D. and appropriate markers in order to obtain quality diagnostic images.
  • Provide radiation protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards; assist physicians in administering contrast media, practice sterile technique, and perform first aid when necessary.
  • Instruct, advise, and assist Radiologic Technology students in performing Radiologic exams, sterile technique, and proper stocking of supplies in radiographic rooms.
  • Assume a role of Clinical Instructor with student radiographers.
  • Assist in research and Quality Improvement projects.
  • Use radiology information system and Hospital Information Systems that are integrated with the Department of Radiology to keep patient data up-to-date such as scheduling tracking, along with appropriate Image Services and maintenance responsibilities.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of assigned areas.
  • Rotate within department, its divisions, and all off-site clinics, by shifts as required and needed; cooperate with all personnel, promoting harmony within the department.
  • Explain exam to patients taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.).
  • Attend staff meetings, in-services, and maintain appropriate CEUs in accordance with Massachusetts state licensure and A.R.R.T. requirements.
  • Instruct, advise, and assist with the Orientation of new technologists to radiographic procedures and department policies.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.
  • Collect supplies from designated storeroom, stock, and maintain adequate supplies for assigned area.
  • Use independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations without constant supervision.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary (reception, Image Services, and Escort functions).
Requirements
  • Must have graduated from an approved school of Radiologic Technology.
  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts license as a Radiologic Technologist in the category of Radiography.
  • Must be Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent.
  • Must have 3 years experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
  • Must be able to operate and utilize all types of x-ray and related equipment and supplies.
  • Must effectively use interpersonal skills to deal with patients and fellow employees who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Must be able to read and interpret requisition forms.
  • Must be able to comprehend complex information and use independent judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in order to transfer knowledge and skills to students and new employees.
  • Must have an understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the Department of Radiology relating to patient information (EPIC, Order entry systems, PACS).
  • Must be physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
Working Conditions
  • Must be prepared to work OT, holidays, and weekends as needed.
  • Works in a large open area in radiology, which is noisy and tends to have extreme temperature and humidity variations.
  • Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation when using proper safety procedures.
  • Continuous standing and lifting.
  • Exposure to human waste and disease.
  • Considerable stress from dealing with a wide variety of hospital staff, patients, and families.
