Preoperative Nursing Specialist

Position Summary: The Pre/Postoperative Registered Nurse is accountable for delivering comprehensive care to patients before and after surgical procedures, ensuring their stability for transition to various care environments, including ICU, Medical Surgical Units, or home settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Employs advanced nursing expertise and sound judgment to provide both direct and indirect patient care.
- Manages the preoperative process, ensuring holistic preparation for surgery, which encompasses patient education, family support, and addressing psychosocial needs, all while adhering to established protocols and practices.
- Coordinates necessary preoperative laboratory tests for patients, meticulously documenting and communicating relevant results.
- Oversees the postoperative care and stabilization of patients, preparing them for a safe return home by addressing all aspects of post-discharge care, including education and family involvement.
- Conducts thorough and ongoing patient assessments, proactively identifying potential complications and reporting significant findings to the anesthesiologist, supervisor, or surgeon as appropriate.
- Monitors patients recovering from surgical interventions within a hospital setting.
- Manages vital signs, changes dressings, administers medications, evaluates recovery progress, and provides education to patients and their families regarding home care instructions.
- Documents all nursing actions in the medical record accurately and promptly.
- Prioritizes the safety of patients, self, and others, responding appropriately in emergency situations.
- Exhibits a solid foundation of nursing knowledge and rationale for clinical decisions, including cardiac monitoring.
- Supervises and guides the activities of non-professional staff as delegated.
- Utilizes medical equipment and supplies efficiently, assisting with inventory management and preparation of necessary materials.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. An Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or six months to one year of relevant experience and/or training, or a combination of education and experience is acceptable.
Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a current RN license in the State of Texas or a Compact state. Certifications in CPR, ACLS, or defibrillation, as well as ERT and PMR, are required.
