Job Overview

Position: Connector Bus Operator Trainee

SMART is seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about providing excellent service to the public. We have multiple openings available across our service regions.

Compensation: $18.18/hour during training; $19.70/hour upon successful completion of the training program (8 weeks).

General Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Connector Bus Operator Trainee is responsible for operating motor coaches to safely transport passengers while ensuring a courteous experience. The operator will also manage fare collection and perform necessary inspections and documentation.

Key Duties

  • Operate motor coaches in compliance with departmental policies, schedules, and local/state traffic laws, while keeping the radio dispatcher informed of status and location.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and deliver services in a friendly manner, prioritizing positive customer interactions.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and tests on vehicle equipment to guarantee safety.
  • Report any equipment or maintenance issues to the appropriate management personnel.
  • Ensure the safe loading, transport, and unloading of passengers.
  • Determine the most efficient routing for vehicles in demand-responsive service.
  • Provide customers with information regarding schedules, routes, fares, and directions.
  • Collect fares accurately, inspect passes, and manage transfers.
  • Assist passengers, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities, in boarding and exiting the vehicle, including operating wheelchair lifts and restraints.
  • Display appropriate route and destination signage within the vehicle.
  • Clear ice, snow, and slush from platforms as necessary.
  • Ensure proper lighting, heating, and ventilation within the vehicle.
  • Review the bulletin board daily for updates on directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain trip sheets and other required documentation.
  • Prepare written reports on any accidents and may serve as a witness if needed.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness aboard the coach.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, especially during the initial two years of employment.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for driving and serving the public.
  • Ability to obtain a Chauffeur's Driver's License.
  • Less than four points on driving record within the last five years.
  • Good driving history with no suspensions, revocations, or restrictions in the past 36 months.
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and understanding written instructions and service information.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and maintain accurate reports.
  • Capable of working in a structured environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to public service.
  • Ability to make sound and timely decisions in problem-solving situations.
  • Proficient in reading maps and navigating to unfamiliar locations.
  • Familiarity with the service area, including major streets and landmarks.
  • Ability to successfully complete background checks, medical examinations, and interviews.
