Sixth Grade Humanities Teacher Position
Founded in 1906, St. Mark's School of Texas is a non-sectarian, college-preparatory, independent day school for boys in grades one through twelve. The School's charter states that it is 'designed to afford its students well-rounded physical, intellectual, moral, and religious training and instruction.' The School is intended to be a diverse community of teachers and students who share a love of learning and who strive for high achievement in whatever they undertake.
St. Mark's aims to prepare young men to assume leadership and responsibility in a competitive and changing world. To this end, the School professes and upholds certain values. These values include the discipline of postponing immediate gratification in the interest of earning eventual, hard-won satisfaction; the responsibility of defending one's own ideas, of respecting the views of others, and of accepting the consequences for one's own actions; and an appreciation for the lively connection between knowledge and responsibility and the obligation to serve.
Position DescriptionThe St. Mark's School of Texas seeks an experienced educator to join our Middle School faculty. A strong candidate will be a compassionate teacher with knowledge and understanding of the development of young boys. Experience should include the background to teach necessary language arts skills along with ancient world history (Middle East, India, China, Persia, Greece, and Rome) within the interdisciplinary structure of a humanities classroom.
Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication skills, be organized and punctual, and be positive team-players. St. Mark's is a vibrant learning community, and successful candidates will be generative in their thinking about teaching and learning, will enjoy working with young boys, and will seek to collaborate with colleagues, share teaching resources, and contribute to the wider school community in a myriad of ways including coaching and participation in our outdoor education program.
Character and leadership education for all boys is a deep commitment at St. Mark's. We have a well-developed program that spans grades one through twelve. Successful candidates will have interest in this aspect of our program and will place equal priority on the character and intellectual development of our students.
Responsibilities- Teach two sections of sixth grade humanities
- Supervise and guide sixth grade advisory students
- Communicate regularly with parents about student progress
- Coach and/or participate in the St. Mark's Wilderness Program
- Work with sixth grade team to organize and orchestrate field trip(s) that correlate with curriculum
- Participate in the character and leadership education program
- A Bachelor's degree is required, a Master's degree is preferred
- Five or more years teaching experience at the middle school level; independent school experience (coaching experience and outdoor education experience) is a plus
- Knowledge of varied teaching strategies to differentiate learning
- Fluency with a variety of technology tools to advance learning
- Passion and patience for working with middle school children
