Job Summary

We are seeking a part-time Crossing Guard to provide safe and efficient crossing of the street by schoolchildren and other pedestrian traffic within the immediate vicinity of school crosswalks/zones.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist schoolchildren and other pedestrians in crossing busy street intersections by halting vehicles through the use of mechanical traffic signals and/or hand-held stop signs.
  • Maintain order and safety practices among children waiting to cross the street at street crossing points; permit street crossing only when safe to do so.
  • Recognize and communicate potentially dangerous traffic situations and hazards to schoolchildren and other pedestrians in the vicinity.
  • Observe and communicate conditions in traffic that may pose a potential safety hazard to the Crossing Guard office and/or the Lead Crossing Guard.
  • Provide excellent customer service while ensuring the overall safety of school-age children in the assigned area.
  • Encourage schoolchildren and other pedestrians to walk their bicycles and/or scooters in crosswalk areas.
  • Encourage pedestrians to cross distraction-free, including advising against the use of electronic devices such as texting, talking on the phone, or wearing headphones while crossing.
  • Maintain flexibility to work a split-shift schedule; report to assignment on a consistent basis.
  • Adhere to program policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions.
  • Adhere to Los Angeles Department of Public Health guidelines set forth.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor and Coordinators.
Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability to follow proper safety protocol and pay strict attention to safety at all times.
  • Ability to provide appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and use clear and proper traffic management signals.
  • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle's STOP message during the entire crossing movement.
  • Ability to work effectively, compassionately, and positively with youth, adults, and staff.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to effectively respond to general questions and issues in a professional and timely manner.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate verbal information clearly, professionally, and tactfully with City employees and members of the public.
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to handle difficult situations with professionalism and good judgment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to report to assignment consistently.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including audio, visual, and mobility aspects.
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment up to 25 pounds may be required.
