Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Superintendent or General Foreman, the Bus Maintenance Technician is tasked with performing repairs and maintenance on NJ TRANSIT buses.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute all responsibilities of a Repairman B and C with standard guidance and oversight.
  • Address all roadside assistance calls.
  • Conduct major and minor inspections with standard guidance, documenting results and implementing corrective measures to ensure bus safety and mechanical integrity.
  • Carry out D.O.T. inspections and complete requisite documentation.
  • Perform engine tune-ups, repairs, and replace powertrain components as necessary.
  • Diagnose and repair issues with heating or air conditioning systems, adhering to EPA regulations and procedures.
  • Remove, replace, and align all bus body components as needed, ensuring proper alignment and repair.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair wheelchair lift systems.
  • Service, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair bus electrical systems.
  • Service, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned by garage management.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • High school diploma or GED required; ASE certification is advantageous.
  • Must possess a CDL License with passenger endorsement or a valid NY/PA CDL with passenger endorsement.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical and background checks.
  • Maintain a clean driving record with fewer than five (5) points.
  • Flexible scheduling is required in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
