Job Summary

Murfreesboro City Schools is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Interpreter to join our team. As a Special Education Interpreter, you will play a critical role in ensuring that deaf and hard of hearing students have equal access to educational opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide sign language interpretive services to eligible deaf and hard of hearing students in educational settings.
  • Interpret all messages faithfully, conveying the content and spirit of the speaker.
  • Assist deaf or hard of hearing students to better comprehend material presented, while never assuming the role of the teacher.
  • Report to the Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for duties and assist with lesson material preparation.
  • Provide interpretive services in various settings about the school, campus, and community, as directed by the teacher.
  • Establish a supportive relationship with students without fostering intense personal or emotional attachments.
  • Defer all inquiries or concerns regarding students to the supervising Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or school administrator.
  • Demonstrate conduct and dress appropriate to the interpreting situation and school setting.
  • Assume responsibility for knowing and following all policies and procedures applicable to the position.
  • Satisfactorily complete all staff development and training activities required by the school system.
  • Maintain and improve sign language skills, as well as licensure and certification requirements for employment as an educational sign language interpreter.
Requirements
  • Must hold a valid Tennessee School Services Personnel license with the appropriate endorsement or meet the following employment standards:
  • Hold at a minimum an associate's degree;
  • Obtain a passing score on the written portion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA); and
  • Obtain a minimum score of 3.0 on the performance assessment portion of the EIPA.
  • Meet at least one of the three requirements defined in the Tennessee Department of Education Employment Standards for Educational Interpreters.
  • Be able to use a variety of signing methods (i.e., ASL, PSE, MCE, Contact Signing) to effectively interpret for all deaf and hearing-impaired students.
  • Previous experience working with deaf and hearing-impaired students as an educational interpreter in a public school setting is preferred.

This position requires physical activity and interaction throughout the day, excellent memory, emotional maturity, and the ability to handle stress. The successful candidate must be able to work in an open, potentially distracting environment and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.

Murfreesboro City Schools offers a competitive benefits package, including eligibility for benefits set annually. This is a non-exempt position with a 10-month contract.
